Movie Review - The A-Team

"What are they doing?"
"I think they're trying to fly that tank..."

The A-Team, a classic TV show from the 80's, may be the only action crew in media who can get away with over-the-top, nonsensical, absolutely ludicrous stunts like the one described above. Now, in the 21st century, where it seems like the only thing important in action films anymore IS stupid, over-the-top, no-story thrills, you would think that it's a perfect time to stir up some of that goofy fanboy pride by creating moments that you CAN just say, "They can do that because it's the freaking A-Team." So, why don't they?

There is one moment in The A-Team where the fantastic four do make an attempt at "flying a tank", and it creates a sense of scuzzball joy, the kind you would expect to find in a movie about the A-Team; but the moment is fleeting, and unfortunately, never again replicated. The movie lacks story in every sense, but doesn't make up for it with the sense of fun that it should. Sure, it's enjoyable, but the filmmakers have been given a license to do the insane without criticism, and they don't take advantage of it. There is definitely over-the-top action, don't get me wrong. But it's the same over-the-top action present in movies like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - for the most part, it takes itself way too seriously.

There's really not a whole lot to say about The A-Team, although you will definitely be let down. But it does have the advantage of a relatively fun cast, and that goes a long way. I "pity the fool" who doesn't enjoy themselves getting lost in this big-bang popcorn movie, but I feel even worse for the filmmakers who could have made even bigger bangs but decided to play it safe.

4.8 /10
