Movie Review - Toy Story 3

"So long, partner."

Toy Story 3, the official resolution to my childhood, is the most heartwarming, fun, and emotionally satisfying movie I've seen all year.

The toys are back, and it's their last waltz. This time, Andy's getting ready for college, and through an accidental trash-related crisis, end up at a local day care center. Being played with all the time, every day, never to be rejected again by an "owner" but instead face endless generations of kids? A toy's dream. But of course, there's the big "Or so they thought..."

Turns out, Sunnyside Daycare is a nightmare prison run by a crazy stuffed bear, and it's up to Woody to break the clan out. The adventure that follows is madly creative, combining humor and action to create a ridiculously entertaining prison break spoof. I don't want to give too much away, but the creative minds at Pixar were in full force on this one.

This great escape, the clever dialogue, the great pop culture references - they're all just bonuses, as incredible as they are. The true heart of Toy Story 3 is it's emotional core, a bittersweet symphony of nostalgia and farewell.

It's interesting to me that Toy Story 3 is referred to as a kids movie, when in fact, I, being a 16 year old boy, fall into the exact demographic that this movie targets. When the first Toy Story came out, I was a little boy like Andy, playing with my toys, and now, as Andy is about to leave for college, I'm getting ready for the big exodus as well. It's the truest story of goodbye I've ever seen; the ending to a generation of kids like me, preparing to bid farewell to their Buzzes and Woodies.

Toy Story 3 is the very definition of a "must-see" movie. How often do you find heartwarming, fun, hilarious, clever, action-packed, and emotionally resonant entertainment for people of ALL ages? Not often at all. It's a hat-tip to the imagination. Toy Story 3 completes the trilogy and finally grants it it's core ambition: it goes above, and way beyond.

9.7 /10
